| Notes | These data were inputted based on subtracting the total number of known voyages extracted from cases cited in Renault and his table "Immigration africaine," which totals 34,258 between 1848 and 1861. P. Lovejoy estimates 33,958 enslaved people were brought into Indian Ocean Islands, mostly Réunion, as engagés. Allowing for a mortality rate of 2 percent, probably 35,000 enslaved people left southeast Africa and Madagascar. Estimates require further analysis which is ongoing through consultations with Virginie Chaillou-Atrous whose thesis contains a deeper analysis than provided in P. Lovejoy and Renault. These data were inputted based on subtracting the total number of known voyages extracted from cases referenced in Renault, while the result is divided by the remaining total and number of years. |
