| Notes | In 1854 at Nasik, about a hundred miles from Bombay, Rev. William S. Price of the CMS founded the African Asylum, a school and orphanage for Africans. The Asylum was a department of the Indo. British Institution, which was connected with the Trinity Chapel. Ten African boys entered the first year, and two years later, twenty-four entered, when several slaves imported into Karachi were liberated and sent to the Bombay depot. The Bombay government contributed a subsidy which had been levied as fines on the importers. The Bombay commissioner of police reported in 185? that the Africans received a "suitable education to enable them to earn a livelihood and also receive such moral and religious instruction as will tend to make them good members of the community."
