Notes Al-Mukhtar b. ‘Abd ar-Rahman al-Ganduzi, a Moroccan merchant from Figuig (a town on the border with Algeria), traded regularly in Tlemcen. In 1850, he brought ten black female slaves to Tlemcen for private sale – public sales were forbidden by the colonial authorities. But the French justice of the peace, Mr. Perez, was informed of the arrival of these slaves and without alerting General de brigade Mac Mahon,26 he confiscated them and entrusted them to the care of the inhabitants of the city. Apparently, this action did not sit well with the military administration that intended to delay the implementation of the abolition decree.
