Notes | Along with Aden and the Seychelles, Bombay served as a depot for freed Africans. In fact, many of those manumitted in Aden were subsequently sent to Bombay because it was a larger station and provided greater opportunities for employment. In 1835 over 200 slaves were seized in three Arab vessels at the port of Porbandar in Kathiawar and were subsequently sent to Bombay, where the commissioner of police was instructed to place them in employment, in some charitable institution, or with families. At first only Christian families were sought, but after Muslim Africans refused to live with any but Muslim families, the government honored that choice. Although there was no written agreement, the government stressed the point that the Africans were free and could leave if they wished to do so.' The government paid an annual subsidy for each child but nothing for adults. Bombay, Political Department, February 13, 1839, p. 30. |
