Notes In the 1830s the government also attempted to purchase outright privately owned slaves who performed well while under contract to the administration. There are several cases of slaves who were rented by the government to work in the hospital, for example, who were subsequently purchased from their masters in 1837 and 1838 and converted into engagés.
