Notes | Of fugitive slaves who took refuge at the Consulate, 84 were granted manumission certificates, while 19 slaves who took refuge in the Agency at Lingah were also manumitted. Erom complaints made by several freed slaves, there is reason to apprehend that the petty chiefs of the Beyaban coast do not pay due regard to manumission certificates in their subsequent treatment of tie persons concerned. It is not immediately clear if any of these people were African, although inputted totals are meant to represent the possibility. |
