Notes A batch of eleven slaves recently imported, three of whom were manumitted by the Political Resident in the Persian Gulf [at Basaidu] and sent here [in Muscat] for repatriation [to Africa], was despatched in a buglah to Zanzibar to the care of Her Majesty's Agent and Consul-General at Zanzibar on 2nd February 1900, under the orders of the Government of Indian, with a view to their being employed on plantation work there. In March [1904], the Resident visited the small community of freed Negroes voluntarily domiciled at Bassidu, and found them quite contented with their lot. Not one of them was willing to leave the station. They have built themselves huts within our limits and many of them cultivate a small plot of ground, and, if their means are small and their life frugal, they are at all events free from any sort of worry and oppression.
