Notes Les missionaires choisirent celui de Rumonge et ils y arrivaient en juillet 1879. Or quelques enfants avaient été rachetés à Rumongé, et Deniaud profita de son passage à Uvira pour racheter trois autres. Les Pères Blancs établis à Rumongé avaient aussitôt commencé à racheter des enfants esclaves don’t, après deux de présence, le nombre se montait à dix-sept. Eduqués suivant la prescirption de Lavigerie dans leurs habitudes africaines, ils recevaient une instruction religieuse, apprenaient à lire et à écrire dans la langue du pays et passaient le reste du temps en activités manuelles. Une différence plus important résidait dans le fait que les rachats n'avaient pas porté seulement sur des enfants, mais aussi des adultes: treize en 1881.
