Notes He stated that his name Yacoob Ibn Abdallah el Habashi, that he was an Abyssinian by birth, that whilst a child he was carried away from his native country, sold at Jeddah and ultimately brought to this country by his master, a Colonel in the Turkish army, whom he had served for several years in Yemen. He moreover said that he was a Christian in religion, and that he never had an opportunity of seeking his freedom until accident brought his master to Bey rout. He had in the first place sought refuge with one of the American missionaries but was sent by that gentlemen to this Consulate. I caused the young man to accompanied by a Dragoman of this Consulate General to the Governor of Bey rout with a request that he might be set at liberty, should His Excellency find sufficient grounds for doing so, and after listening carefully to the slave's history, and satisfying himself as to its truth, he gave him a Certificate of Manumission, and he has now become a free man. This is by no means the first time that Raef Effendi has shown a readiness to act upon my representation in favour of fugitive slaves and given them their liberty whenever he could consistently do so.
