Notes Charles Euan-Smith visited Chake Chake on Pemba in March 1875. "During the two days that he stayed in the town, he informed the lndians of the successful liberation tours of Kirk and Elton and of the penalties to which they would be liable if they did not readily come forward to free their slaves. To his surprise, they pleaded ignorance of the order against Indian possession of slaves. The Indians at Chaki Chaki and in the neighbourhood brought forward 213 slaves-eighty-five men, 113 women. eight boys and seven girls-who were freed and given emancipation papers. All the slaves, with the exception of three men and six women, chose to remain with their masters. A large majority of the women were described as "concubines," and as such it was not surprising that they chose to remain with their "husbands." All the slaves freed, except forty-two, were present to receive their papers of freedom; the papers for those absent were entrusted to the Indian customs-master in the town for personal delivery to them. The customs master was also charged with reporting cases of ill-treatment of the emancipated slaves to the British officials."
