Notes A register of recruits to Glover’s force in September 1873. Conscripts were almost entirely northerners and most were Muslim. These individuals who, until joining the force, had been slaves within the Gold Coast colony (mainly Accra), but many others were from allied states abutting colonial towns. It is clear from correspondence surrounding this recruitment effort that their masters were strongly opposed to their induction, and at least one point a street riot occurred in which several enlisted slaves and masters were injured.
