Notes The Tortola registers were began to be compiled on 15 May 1822. Totals we obtained differed from those stated in Dougan’s report. In the first group he claimed, “168 in number” whereas we counted 158; he stated “1,070 in number” for group two, whereas we tallied 1,110 people; and the final group he counted 85, whereas we had only 60. Dougan total was 1,323, whereas we arrived at 1,328. The difference might be attributed to the complexity and size of these records, which undoubtedly require a full and more thorough transcription.
