| Notes | In Constantinople, the British consulate helped liberate and register some 823 enslaved Africans between 17 February 1881 and 31 July 1889. For the first four years, annual totals were not provided but had to be averaged to about 58 per year, although after that more precise dates were provided in the registers. Liberated Africans were divided into three groups: 1) domestic slaves who sought the help of the British embassy then were freed by police with or without the consent of their owners; 2) domestic slaves who applied directly to the police to be freed; and 3) newly imported slaves who were seized and emancipated by the police upon their arrival to Constantinople. Ottoman authorities made the registers for the last two groups. Erdem provides a table demonstrating the distribution of people into these three categories annually. From this total, there were 128 males and 695 females. |
