Notes In June 1879, James Zohrab remarked that local government at Jeddah had put a new system to dispose of the freed slaves, who were placed in a depot until they were hired to locals. Persons who hired a freed slave had to pay a fee of 5 silver mecidiyes (100 kurus or 19 shilling) to the authorities, and a salary to the freed slave of 15 jurus a month in the first year. The effect produced in this town by the capture of 38 slaves and 5 slave dealers.
