Notes Bagamoyo's plantations continued to expand and baptisms took place in large numbers, especially when Hirtzlin's mass campaign was at its peak in the mid-1880s. A steady stream were also married, usually before heading to an interior station to constitute the Christian village. The number of dead often reflected the number of dying children. Through the late 1870s and 1880s, the ransoming of slaves continued at Bagamoyo and inland, but sales were sporadic since there were no formal markets as had been at Zanzibar. Usually between forty and one hundred people were ransomed per year. Meanwhile, the British consul sent the Spiritains groups of slaves freed at sea in the early 1880s, usually handing them over to the Zanzibar mission, from where most went to Bagamoyo.
