Notes The last tour was undertaken by Kirk himself. As the previous tours did not cover the Tanga district, he visited the area in November and called upon the twenty-eight Indians he found there to liberate their slaves. Sixty-four slaves were produced and granted freedom papers. Before returning to Zanzibar on November 9, he impressed upon the lndians the fact that they could no longer own slaves; and, to demonstrate his seriousness, he punished an Indian for concealing a slave; he also punished an African for the purchase of a slave from an Indian by depriving the former of the "illegally" purchased slave.
