Registered Total 192
Notes A total of 6,205 libertos registered from extant sources compiled into annual returns. Registers exist, but were not released by the time of the publication of "Abolition and the Registration of Slaves and Libertos in Portuguese Mozambique, 1856–76." In footnote two, they state "Currently only a fraction of the database we created, approximately 14,000 records, is available online. The remaining records will be available soon." The total is a sample since it is known that other registers from various districts have not yet been located. No estimate for total number of libertos in Moçambique provided. They did not include in their totals slave ship captures by the Portuguese navy off the coast of East Africa. Accordingly, registration of libertos by district were: Bazaruto (1 liberto); Cabo Delgado (3,007 libertos); Inhambane (118); Lourenço Marques (494); Moçambique (1,051); Quilimane (216); Sofala (29); Tete (1,042); and Zambézia (247). In 2022, the regenerated identities for libertos on Between Oceans and Continents (www.africanregisters.org) amounted to 4,543 people.
